Counseling Children and Teens

Some of the issues that I see both children and teens for include:
  • Depression and Anxiety
  • Anger Management/Impulse Control
  • Self esteem/ Social Issues
  • Grief/Loss
  • Trauma/Critical Incidents
  • Adoption and Foster Care
  • Physical, Sexual, Emotional Abuse and Neglect
  • Communication Problems with Family Members
  • School related issues
  • Self injury
I am a child specialist and have worked with children throughout my entire career in both clinical and academic settings. Young children do not always have the skills to communicate what may be troubling to them but they love to play! In the therapeutic setting, children often use play to tell their stories and how they are feeling. I use a variety of creative interventions such as use of a sand tray, art, and literature to build rapport and engagement with the children with whom I am working.

Teens may display behaviors that put a strain on familial relationships. Teens often mask their feelings stating that they "don't care" which usually is not the case. Many teens isolate themselves from family members when they feel frustrated or sad. It is important to identify normal teenage behavior and symptoms of more serious causes. In my experience, teens often need a non-judgmental space to discuss their feelings as well as problem solve on how to deal with peer pressure, relationships, and the challenges of being torn between the worlds of childhood and adolescence. I build a calm and safe environment where your child or teen can be themselves as well as explore their feelings, identify current barriers in their life, and improve how they see themselves. I have formed trusting relationships with children and teens of all types and value each individual and the unique qualities and strengths that they possess.

Being a former School Counselor, I have worked with children who exhibit difficulty in school both socially and academically. I understand the pressures of school and am fluent in the language of teachers, so I am able to work with you and your child's school to support your child or teen and their needs.

A cornerstone of my work is to build the relationship and attachment between the parent and child.  Parenting is rewarding but can be an arduous endeavor for many. It is important to build a nurturing and consistent relationship with effective communication. Therapy can be an environment to learn and implement new skills to improve the quality of your relationship with your child or teen.  I work with a variety of families including two parent, single parent, adoptive and foster families.
